THE GOLDEN GIRLS

I've been always an advocate of raw and timeless beauty. It's not a matter of course to grow old gracefully nowadays
so much the more I'm impressed by the easygoing attitude of those in style ageing influencers.
Let me introduce you: The Golden Girls of the Fashion and Music Industry!

The One and Only: Mrs. Iris Apfel!
"Personal style is attitude, attitude, attitude. It has to come from within." she told last year the Vogue.
The old lady with large round, thick framed glasses is a business woman, interior designer and huge fashion icon. At age 90, Apfel became a visiting professor at University of Texas at Austin where she lectures about fashion.

Lady Gaga of the 80s: Grace Jones!
The Jamaican singer actress and supermodel is famous for her provoking and unusal androgynous looks which inspired the style of many tastemakers of our time. Just recently the Studio 54 fixture hits at age of 67 topless the stage while perfoming at festivals.

The Ageless Beauty: Lauren Hutton
"We have to be able to grow up. Our wrinkles are our medals of the passage of life. They are what we have been through and who we want to be. I don't think I will ever cut my face, because once I cut it, I'll never know where I've been." Lauren Hutton is 71 years old, authentic and has already for a decade now a permanent place in fashion. At age of 61 she posed nude for the Big Magazine and received a lot for positive feedback. Currently she's been featured in a charity campaign DoSomething.org which partnered with Alexander Wang.

Oldie but Goldie: Yoko Ono
"Pop is perfomance art. And perfomance art is Pop." The 82 widow and second wife of John Lennon is a Japanese avant-gard artist, singer and peace activist. Yoko Ono's latest fashion coup was a John Lennon-inspired menswear line for Opening Ceremony.

Grand Dame of the Fashion Industry: Carmen Dell'Orefice
The world's oldest working supermodel is 84 and as present as ever. On her 80th birthday, the model was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of the Arts London in recognition of her contribution to the fashion industry. Carmen covered Vogue for the first time when she was 15 and has become indispensable in the industry ever since.

Model-turned-Oil Whisperer: Linda Rodin
The founder of Olio Lusso and model with a unique sense of style, Rodin doesn't care about her growing older appearance at all: "I find it hystercially funny that 40 years later, when I'm wrinkled and a mess they love me. I'm 67 and still look cool in jeans, I guess.", Rodin said in an interview. The latest recognizable campaign was her appearance in the Lookbook of  the Olsen's twins label The Row in 2014. The former model is now a businesswoman and freelance stylist for models, actresses and singers.

Those inspiring ladies are the proof and manifestation of timeless beauty, don't you think?!

  5. Such a beautiful post - it's nicer to see women like this in the fashion industry as I think it makes things a bit more 'human' - nowadays everyone tries to look perfect and copies each other whether these real beauties are the ones that have and always will have style!

These ladies are fab! I had the pleasure of meeting Carmen Dell'Orefice a few months ago. The lady GLOWS. You know how someone walks into the room and all eyes are on them? That's what she does. I have a feeling the other fab women do the same.

  31. Great spotlight on these beautiful ladies full of character; Grace Jones is so badass! Personally, I find them much more interesting than the standard sixteen year old model. These women have lived a rich life and are still going strong, very inspiring! I would like to add Charlotte Rampling to this roundup (last year she was the face of beauty label Nars) and Joni Mitchell, who was featured in this year's Saint Laurent campaign.
    Love this post, Ira!

  88. I definitely agree with you, Ira, regarding the change of idols. It all feels the same, a one-dimensional puddle of vapid celebrities (I honestly don't see the appeal of certain "idols" *cough* Kim K. *cough*). Instead, these ladies are classy and gifted, their beauty not just skin deep but coming from within. That's the type of beauty that will never fade!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Yes, yes, yes! The beauty of those ladies is timeless!
THANK youuuu, Izzy! I thought I'm the only one who think Kim is a questionable appearence... ;) Not mentioning her ability to function as an idol... I mean: Hellooo world, wake up... well that's another topic! Hahaha! I love talking to you, my dear! Enjoy your day, Izzy! <3
