THE PARETO PRINCIPLE OF BLOGGING

LEATHER DRESS - H&M // SHIRT - MANGO // BAG, HEELS - ZARA

The Pareto Principle claims that
80% of your outcomes come from 20% of your inputs.
What does that mean for a blogger?

Well, it means: "Less is More."
Creating a content: 20 Percent
Promoting your content: 80 Percent
The impact: priceless!

It's a matter of fact, to be recognized as a blogger is often an interaction of
different chances. Either you take them or not because www is not sleeping.
I've recently noticed a lot of discussions on other blogs about commenting
and thought almost a week about involving myself or not...

Blogging should be fun! It's like a little "baby" (at least for me) who you should help to
get on its own feet. After raising it for many, read many years, it's not over! Your "baby"
is doing its own thing, while you stay in the background, ready to catch it up when it falls.
That's a no-brainer!

Blogging shouldn't be a compulsion! When you've reached a point, where you're
forcing yourself to blog - then please for heaven's sake take a break and relax, like
many other bloggers doing so right now. Otherwise your creativity and "baby" are suffering!
I have to admit I'm never satisfied with my content so I definitely have to change
my priorities since my Pareto principle looks like this:
Creating a content: 80%
Promoting it: 20%
The impact: in need of improvement.

But you know what? It's ok since the only person I HAVE TO PLEASE is just ME
and my high expectations on myself.

  3. Content is king! Even if you promote like crazy and your content isn't great, people will most likely not come back anyway. And I totally agree with you that blogging should never be forced.

  4. Hmm, the Pareto Principle is definitely interesting, but I do highly regard content more so than promotion. The Pareto Principle seems to only apply to blogs prioritising traffic and not readership. While this in itself is completely alright, for myself, personally, I tend to try to write acceptable content even though I don't do crazy amounts of promo work. Just an opinion!

I do think you've got some great content on this blog, Ira, but like you said, one's own high expectations can never be fulfilled, can it? Loving your heels, and have a lovely weekend! <3

  5. Such an interesting perspective and I am glad you shared it. I have recently been running on fumes with blogging but I think it is because travel blogging is so much more time intensive, than what I used to spend fashion blogging. Its interesting because I recognize what it takes to be successful with, say travel blogging, but creating "how to guides" or "city guides" just doesnt make me happy. So, yes, my organic traffic suffers but hey, I am doing what I like and that is all that matters in the long run! Thanks for sharing and love your outfit!

  6. A very interesting post that I've no doubt will divide opinion! I've always considered content and promotion to be a 50/50 ratio, though we can definitely agree promotion plays a large part of blogging success, regardless of whether it comes from yourself or others! :)

I love your post and your thoughts! Yes sometimes I strict myself to post recently but it somehow makes me tired because I have those moments when I am so lazy to do anything especially on editing my photos and blogging. So now I try to keep myself more relax and post based on my mood. Thank you for posting this! :)

    Have a wonderful day! <3

  15. I believe in the Pareto principle. But not sure if it applies to blogging fully! I guess blogs are created out of passion and love and that should always be the driving force. And they should be of happiness to the creator before anything!

  22. That's definitely me! I feel like promoting it can be so time consuming, and doesn't yield results as tangible as simply creating content. One of my primary ways of promoting myself is commenting on other blogs I actually like (not for the sake of commenting, which bugged me so much I wrote a post on it haha), but I feel like most successful professional bloggers have a strong media presence across all platforms! Seems like so much work.

  25. Hmm that makes sense-it's so important to promote your content. But promoting takes 5ever blahhhh. Like just commenting on people's blogs takes hours and hours for me! I do think that it is important to provide good content as well. Make people want to come back! :)

  26. Thought provoking post dear Ira. Ive always read that content is king and I try to write good content that will keep readers coming back. Hopefully I'm achieving success with that, :). Had never heard of the Pareto principal but it sure does sound interesting. I feel like a good balance should be struck between content and promoting. Definitely no walk in the park. On the outfit, you look fabulous. Great accessories.

  28. As always, I love your writings accompanying the gorgeous photo(s).. and also this one is quite interesting. I agree that sometimes, it really seems that that certain fashion bloggers spend a lot of time on marketing their blogs.. and less time on their actual content. And I think that's because their main (or perhaps sole) motivation is to get famous so that they will get invited for collaborations/events/deals/etc. And they're commenting on a lot of blogs.. even if they most likely don't really appreciate the outfit/topic. And/or they haven't read the blog text. And it just seems disingenuous.

I'm not in it for the fame or popularity. I have been posting pics since 2005 on MySpace (now pretty much extinct) and Flickr.. and just like with fashion blogs I comment a lot on other people's stuff if and only if I really like it! :)

Sure, if I like a certain fashion blog for the total package (outfits, idea and text), I will usually try to make an effort to comment on all posts. But you won't find me on every blog in the blogosphere copy-pasting the exact same comment. I also think most people will see right through that.

So I will just keep on posting what I like, which are outfits with heels and nerdy stuff! :-P And I will scour the internet for fashion blogs which have themes that resonate with me. And annoy them with my comments! x-D

  29. This is EXACTLY what I needed to hear right now!! Thank you!!! In my previous comment I said I've been a bit stressed out, etc. I think I definitely need to take a little break from blogging. Not too long, just so I feel refreshed again, because I've actually been feeling super guilty for not having written for a while. I don't like to write when I don't love my content, either, so I prefer not to post at all. And you're right, I have this ridiculous expectation of myself and it's stressing me out! We need to chill out ;) THANK YOU for making me realise this *hugs* you are so awesome as always :) xxx

I love the baby metaphor, and it is so true - at a certain level it will continue even when you're not no longer nurturing it 24/7, but as with any parent you need rest now and then! I have been pressuring myself a lot to be more productive with blogging lately and make each post perfect, but it simply isn't needed.

Very lovely blog post! I really love how you put it! The main criteria is: it should be fun, it should allow you to be creative, it should express who YOU are....And that's exactly what it is for me right now...I didn't have a clue of blogging...It took a tremendous lot of time but today I'm so happy I did it...

well said! Promotion is part of the game, but we all need to set our priorities straight and remember to impress ourselves...because when we manage to do that, the feeling is priceless:) I just returned from a short vacation that was spur of a moment thing and I was pleasently suprised by the feedback I got while I was gone because it gives me the feeling that people are not just visiting my blog to return the comment but because they might actually like it...you know what I mean? I think we all need genuine comments and communication...It is alright to promote our own blog, but that should not be the only thing that's on our mind.

You look wonderfully stylish Ira! I really like those heels!

Haha, me for example! I think everybody who writes usefull stuff should be recognized as a "real" blogger - cause that's how it works in the blogosphere and the community! Otherwise those peeps should overthink their goals...

  58. Yep.. since 2005. Actually even earlier.. but I posted those pictures on forums, so that wasn't really public.
I started my blog, because I noticed that whenever I was posting pictures on MySpace or Flickr.. I was always writing small pieces of text to accompany the picture. Gradually those texts became larger and more elaborate. Then Flickr changed it format.. and it meant that nobody would really read those texts unless they scrolled down.. and that's when I made the conscious decision to be serious about the blog. :)

I think I annoyed you a lot today.. I had some catching up today as I was visiting my parents this long weekend! Hope you had a great weekend too! :)

Glad you've had great time with your parents. hank you for reminding me to visit mine... it's been a while. :-) My weekend was quite cozy and relaxing, THANK YOU!!!
