PRISONER OR PIONEER?

Earie Surreal Photography by Bobby Becker

According to John Fiske "culture is a constant site of struggle between those with and those without power".  Do you agree?
And moreover would you consider yourself as a prisoner of this vain online pop culture nowadays? Or is this pioneer generation the enlightenment of a dark world?

  4. I think it depends upon the person on how to see their life through it.
I am a pioneer on my generation and no one will ever take it from me

  8. I think it is sad if we are a prisoner of pop culture... I do like the picture of how it is depicted... I hope it is not always a struggle between those who have to those who don't have power... we should all work together xox

  9. I'm glad you like it, Ivi! I wouldn't say we're prisoner of our generation since the creation of it depends on us. And I believe art, music or literature are outstanding represantatives of each culture even in this digital era (which is also an expression of this struggle btw). People who consider theirselves as prisoner maybe just don't get used to it or simply don't know how to use it. It's a matter of interpretation you know! ;) Please let me know if you have a different one, my dear! I would love to read another thoughts on that!!! <3 Hugs!

  18. Our history is proof of that struggle; right from our beginnings. The need for power, to possess everyone and control them is embedded so deep within us. We started off as nomads so it's only natural that our instincts are to rebel against those who tell us what to do and how to be. Though the majority of us don't go to extremes while others aren't even aware of it. I also think we are all prisoners of pop culture. You can try to deny it but it's true. The other day I found myself longing for a simpler time, even thinking that maybe I was born in the wrong century. Life was simpler back then, it was about survival of the basics, not the kind of survival we strive for today which consists of material things and paying bills. Technology has made it "easier" in some aspects but it's also cost us a lot too. Socially. And I don't think we're really understanding the impact of it, not for another few generations later. I'm not hating on technology though, it's been wonderful in terms of connection and such but you can't deny all the negative mental impacts it's also having too. Like FOMO. Something I'm beginning to struggle with myself because of being so constantly connected.

    Was meinst du?

  25. That artwork matches your question so well! :)

I definitely see where the 'prisoner' bit comes, but also the 'pioneer', when you branch out and do something different, just for you, and you have fun and relax and enjoy and don't feel the urge to spend more or share it all on social media, etc.

What if we are all prisoners?? Scary thought! What is your opinion on this, Ira? Hope you're having a lovely weekend, sweetie :) x

I think we are all sometimes prisoners of the online culture and pop culture, but we can also be pioneers if we invest some time and effort in what we do. Great image!

  36. I believe it's all in how we view things. If we believe to be prisoners we will be. On the other hand if we believe ourselves to be pioneers, we will work towards being pioneers.

  37. I struggle between the two views constantly. Ultimately, I want life with meaning. Meaning for me does not mean the same as meaning for someone else. I do have qualms with the extra "stuff" we created, but I realize this extra stuff is also what aids in my existence and allows me to earn money for something I consider as having meaning. I.e. I have a love for fashion, but I don't think it's necessarily a game-changer. We just have a lot of choices. Curating this field allows me to earn money doing something I love to then donate to animal shelters and buy homeless people meals when I see someone in need. I consider that a greater "meaning" for myself. Ultimately, I don't consider myself a prisoner of the pop culture since I always keep my eyes on the world outside of the bubble. The two create a very big contrast that makes me struggle existentially sometimes. I think as long as you have awareness of the entire world, it's easier to embrace everything and not simply differentiating as good and bad.

Phew, sorry for such a long rant! Hope it made sense.

  38. I totally agree with you Ira. I just have to admit that sometimes I feel a little bit pressure in this digital era - I just say Social Media (: But our digital era has so many advantages too.

  40. I think there is validity to this statement depending on how you view it and the struggle to not be a prisoner is real. I would like to hope that I'm not imprisoned but rather doing my own thing.

  41. I agree to an extent but I feel now, there is another option or continuous spectrum is starting to be seen between the two 'with and without power'. I feel like we're moving past that more, and past the vanity of pop culture because more people are breaking free from these ideas, so maybe, before, more people felt a prisoner, but not so much anymore?

    ReplyDelete
  42. That definitely holds true. The world doesn't have to be in the state it is in today. Man has put a price tag on everything.

  50. I knew you would understand my thoughts, Sonia!! Beeing influenced by the media and technology means beeing a prisoner of it. You can't live with and you can't live without it! You have so many decisions to make nowadays and it's getting worse with all the technical influences. It's sad we have to accept those two worlds for not getting left behind...
Thank you so much for your thought provoking and wise feedback, Sonia!! <3 Hugs!

  52. Absolutely, dear! Hmmm... I think the right balance is the key! Watching the younger generation running around watching at their smartphones would be THE perfect scenary of a prison-like society, don't you think? :) Otherwise there wouldn't be positive (political) changes without the technology in this world. And hey, YOU ARE definitely a PIONEER, Amanda! People like you, @Vanisha and @kellmenow change this world! <3

Since the technology and media are growing we have a lot of decisions and choices to made. I believe we all can be pioneers of the pop culture, as long as we still believe in our values and morality and don't forget our real existence "outside of the bubble".
